I remember playing with my mom's makeup as a little girl. It was fun and it really didn't matter if my lipstick was outside of my lip line, or the blush made me look like a clown.
I was of the belief that the more makeup I had on my face, the more beautiful I was. Those carefree days are gone, but lovely memories remain.
As a mature woman, it's still fun to play with makeup, but the rules have changed, and so have the applicators. Fingers, and mom's old sponge applicators just don't do the trick anymore.
There are many makeup techniques given throughout Makeup and Beyond's Beauty Guide, and most have a common thread...makeup brushes.
You wouldn't cut a turkey with a spoon, and you shouldn't put on makeup with a spongy spatula.
Favorite Makeup Brushes
Powder Brush
Use to evenly apply and blend dry makeup powders to the face, neck, ears, and chest areas. Excellent tool for eliminating makeup lines.
Foundation Brush
Smoothly and evenly applies liquid foundation to the face and neck area. The brush is used to reach indented areas of the face, especially around the nose and below the lips.
Cheek (Blush) Brush
Used to apply dry blush on the cheeks. This brush is often smaller than a powder brush making it an excellent choice for sculpting.
Select a brush larger than most brushes that are included with blush compacts. An ideal cheek brush is made of natural bristles, not synthetic, is soft, but not fluffy, is compact, but not stiff, and the bristle’s top should be dome shaped. The bristles should move slightly when blown.
It can be difficult to achieve a natural smooth application with a tiny compact brush, sponge, or pad, and if the brush is too fluffy, powder will go everywhere.
Eye Definer Brush
Use to apply wet eyeliner above and below the root line of the lashes.
Smudge Brush
A smudge brush is not actually a "brush" at all. It is a sponge tipped applicator used to smooth and blend eyeliner for a more polished look. They are often used to create the smoky-eye look.
Eye Contour/Crease Brush
Use to apply eye color to the crease of the eye.
Eyeshadow (color) Brush
Use to apply dry eyeshadow to the lid and under the brow. A minimum of three eyeshadow brushes should be in your collection; one for each color.
Eye Lash and Eyebrow Brush and/or Comb
Often these are found as a dual-ended makeup tool, with a brush on one end and a comb on the other.
Use the brush side to clean the brows: Sweep the hair back and forth, and then shape.
After putting on eyebrow liner, brush the brows to blend in any pencil marks.
Use to apply gel to the brows.
Use the comb side to remove mascara lumps, and to separate the lashes. They are also used to shape the brow.
Bronzer Brush
Bronzers are used to add a color and healthy glow to the skin. The secret behind bronzers is the brush. Bronzers are swept lightly over the face.
Lip Brush
Helps put lipstick or lip gloss exactly where you want it.
Applies lipstick and lip gloss evenly and into the creases of the lips.
Use less lipstick with a lip brush to accomplish the look you want.
Concealer Brush
Allows for more control of where you want the product applied, and in the amount you want applied.
