Many women don't wear blush on their face because they either don't know how to apply blush or they are unaware that blush is a means to add life to skin that otherwise may look tired and dull.
How to apply blush
Blush is considered the final touch of makeup and it should
color coordinate with your lipstick. See our Blush and Lipstick Color Chart for coordinating lipstick and blush colors.
Before applying blush on your
face, load your makeup brush with blush (assuming it is a powder) and then tap off the excess.
Next, look into
your mirror and smile - the round fleshy part of your cheeks are called
the “apples” and that is where you begin to apply your blush.
As you move your brush over the cheek's apples, begin to brush the color towards your hairline and then up to your temples.
Feather any edges to eliminate fine lines and/or any
streaks of blush on your face. You want the color to look
as if nature put it there.
Without applying any more blush to your brush, sweep a bit of blush across your chin and in the middle of your forehead. This will add a little extra color to your face.
What is the Best Blush
With such a variety of different blush types on the market (powder, gel, cream and tint), it will be helpful to become familiar with your skin typebefore shopping. See our skin type chart if you need a refresher.
Here is a brief breakdown and how to apply blush of different types.
Mineral Powder blushes are universal, meaning that most skin types can wear them. They are long lasting, and if not over-applied, look very natural. How to apply blush: Brush
Gel blush provides more of a translucent shine and are best suited for women with oily to normal skin types. How to apply blush: Brush or fingertips.
Cream blush is usually thick in consistency, but not overwhelming on the skin. Because cream blush is rich in moisturizing ingredients, they are best suited for women with dry skin. How to apply blush: Sponge, fingertips, or brush.
Tinted blush is sometimes referred to as a cheek and lip stain. A common complaint expressed by women about using tinted blush is that it "eats up their foundation and dries too quickly when applied." However, women who prefer not to wear foundation seem to love the natural glow tinted blush gives them. How to apply blush: Brush or fingers (has been reported to stain fingertips).
