Eyebrow Makeup Tips
For natural looking eyebrows, use two shades of eyebrow pencils instead of one.
How to pencil in eyebrows
- Choose two shades of eyebrow pencil, one close to the color of your hair, and another a shade or two lighter. than the darker pencil.
- Use the darker pencil to make short light strokes from the beginning of the brow to the arch.
- After the arch, switch to your lighter pencil. With soft strokes, finish the ends of the brow.
- To complete the look, brush the brows with a brow brush to soften any noticeable pencil lines.
- To create eyebrows that appear fuller, use eyebrow powder instead of an eyebrow pencil. Apply with a stiff angled brush, then topcoat with clear eyebrow gel.
- Brush eyebrows with a stiff eyebrow brush after shaping them with an eyebrow pencil. This softens the pencil marks so that the eyebrows appear more natural.
- Add color and volume with tinted eyebrow gel.
- For eyebrows that are naturally dark: If you have forgotten where you put your eyebrow pencil, apply a small amount of mascara on the thickest part of the eyebrow up to the arch. Then, with a stiff eyebrow brush, pick up some mascara from before the arch and sweep it forming the tail of the eyebrow. Brush entire brow with a stiff brush and then shape.
-Don’t use mascara instead of a pencil or gel if your lacking eyebrow hair, or your brows are naturally light in color.
When selecting eyebrow makeup, buy colors mimicking the hair color on your head. EXCEPT…
- If your hair is grey and your skin tone is ivory or beige, use soft blonde or taupe colors on the brows. Grey on grey will wash you out.
- If your hair is grey and your skin tone is olive or darker, choose from the line of browns.
- For eyebrows with a few gray hairs, try using a tinted eyebrow gel. Because you will only be tinting your eyebrows, choose a color that matches the color of your current brows...minus the grey of course!
- Eyebrow Stencils - The natural shape of an eyebrow is not a half-circle. Half circles are unflattering and will make a face look older. Eyebrow stencils are a wonderful tool to use when a little extra help in the shaping department is needed. They are available in many shapes and are available with or without an adhesive back. Adhesive-backed stencils seem to be the stencil of choice.
When laying out an eyebrow stencil, first begin by matching the arch of the stencil to your own eyebrow arch. Use a darker pencil to sketch in the thickest part of the brow up to the arch, and a lighter pencil to finish beyond the arch (tail). (Some stencils have a line down the stencil center. Place this line where the arch begins).
