Eat Pie and Cut Calories

It's just what the title suggests, we tell you how to eat pie and cut calories at the same time.  It's the same pie everyone else in the family is eating, plus you can add whipping cream! A bit of surgery is involved, but it's worth the effort and only takes a minute.  Here's how its done:

Pumpkin pie slice

Step 1
Your pie slice

Slice a regular size piece of pumpkin pie; but keep in mind that any type of pie will work.

Pie Surgery

Step 2
Pie surgery

To me the best part of cooked pumpkin pie filling sits next to the outside edge of the crust.

Move the knife to within ½ inch of the outer pie crust and slice through the filling to the bottom crust.

Don't cut through the bottom crust because you will need it.
Pie filling removed

Step 3
Filling reduction

Discard all the pie filling except the 1/2 inch piece from the crust.

Now what you have left of your pie slice is minimal, but you will be satisfied when you're finished.
Pumpkin Pie Spread

Step 4
Pie spread

Next, evenly spread the 1/2 inch of pie filling that remains over the bottom of the crust.

Please don't laugh at the photo, I'll make my pie slice pretty again in the next step.

Step 5
Whipping cream

I love whipping cream, so I spread whipping cream over my pie filling (but I only use half the amount of whipping cream I normally would because I don’t need as much for taste because it’s not competing with a lot of filling).

Wowza, that was a long sentence and now I am out of breath.

In Step 5, you can see the final slice of pumpkin pie (with whipping cream); and the amount of pie filling that was removed in step 3 (filling has pecan on top).

By removing most of the filling and using less whipping cream, you naturally cut down on your calories, but the taste remains the same and so does the number of bites.

It's funny how my brain works.  It thinks it's getting a whole piece of pie and I'm just as satisfied as I would have been had I eaten all that filling with the extra calories.

How to cut even more calories ...

To cut calories even further, you can buy whipping cream (the old fashion kind in the carton) and sweeten it to your taste with an artificial sweetener - myself, I prefer Splenda.

Recipe:  Old Fashion Whipping Cream

  1. Pour the liquid whipping cream into a large bowl.  Whipping cream doubles in size when whipped, so use a big bowl.
  2. With your electric mixer sat on high,  whip the cream until it begins to thicken. This take a few minutes.
  3. Add a few tablespoons of sugar at a time until it satisfies your taste buds. Splenda can be used as a substitute for sugar in whipping cream.
  4. Add one or two teaspoons of vanilla.
  5. Whip to your desired consistency.
When using whipping cream, you don’t want to over-whip or you’ll create butter!  If you create butter, tell the kids your making butter like in the "oldin days" - they never need to know your mistake.
